I would encourage all parents to ensure that you check your child’s Student Planner at least once per week and sign in the appropriate place. The Student Planner is a vital tool in assisting timely home-school communication.
Our ‘theme’ for Woodlawn in 2023 is ‘Recreating the Traditions’. I give full credit to our Student Leaders who came up with this idea late last year. Given the number of Woodlawn traditions that have been disrupted due to COVID-19 and/or flooding over the past three years, it will be wonderful to simply ‘get back to basics’ and reinstate activities and programs which make up our holistic education and have stood the test of time. Our Student Leaders will be working with students from all year levels to promote this theme throughout the year.
On 28 February, we come to the one year anniversary of the devastating flood event of 2022 which decimated our region. This will be a traumatic and triggering time for many people within our College and wider community. Over the coming weeks we will share a number of resources that may be of assistance to your families. The College will hold a special prayer service as part of our regular weekly Assembly on Monday, 27 February.
Our first P&F meeting for 2023 will be held in the College Library on Monday, 13 March at 5.30pm. Please come along and hear how you can be involved in your child’s education.
ChatGPT – there has been significant media coverage of this new AI technology over the holiday break. Rather than simply mandate a regimented ‘block’ of this technology which other educational sectors have chosen to implement, our staff will work with colleagues from across our Diocesan schools to develop an integrated approach where teachers and students work together to benefit from the assistance this rapidly advancing area provides. In the interim, KLA coordinators are working with teaching staff to remove hand-in research tasks from our assessment schedule until a uniform approach can be adopted.
Other news, in brief:
- A number of minor works have been completed over the holiday period: student carpark extension; staff carpark (pool) gravel and wheel stops; bottom carpark fencing; new picnic tables in Kelly Park; 3 x solar tables in Kelly Park; new House coloured grandstands at pool and ovals; Chapel air conditioning; safety window film to stairwell; new Library chairs and blinds; tennis court re-finish; synthetic cricket pitch surfaces started; road repairs; IT office refurbishment; cricket nets underway. I especially thank Mrs Vicky Fitness, Mr Darren Magner and their respective teams for their work over the break towards these projects.
- Our College Newsletters are issued in electronic form. If you are unable to access a digital copy of our Newsletter (via the College App, website or email) I ask that you contact Ms Kendall Thomson in the College Office to request a hard copy.
- Our ICT programme continues to evolve and we have now phased-out the last of the College owned devices. I would issue my own personal reminder about the importance of students storing their devices safely during the school day, especially at recess and lunch times, when they should be locked away in student lockers. This is most important, especially with Accidental Damage insurance incurring an excess. I would like to especially thank Mr Mitchell Scutt and Mr Bailey Kent for their work in ensuring each of our students has access to technology from the beginning of the school year.
- And FINALLY, our annual Inter-House Swimming Carnival will run in its traditional, twilight format on Friday afternoon/evening, 17 February! As this is a compulsory event for all students, there will be no afternoon buses running. As usual, our P&F will have significant involvement on the night, especially in terms of catering. While further information is included elsewhere in this Newsletter, I would like to point out that this event is not licensed and will be alcohol free, which also includes BYO alcohol. Your full support in this regard is appreciated to ensure a safe and fun night for all in attendance.
Existing parents would be aware that we pride ourselves here at Woodlawn on building productive partnerships between home and the College. As in all things, from time to time issues will arise. Mr Campbell, Mrs Reen and I are always available to speak with parents on any matters, provided that these have been initially addressed with the staff member concerned. To contact any member of staff, please phone the College office on 6626 2600 or email: sjcwdln@lism.catholic.edu.au and the message will be forwarded on.
You will find a ‘flow chart’ outlining home-school communication reproduced below.
Communication Between Home and the College

The education sector is still following baseline COVID-smart measures in Term 1, 2023. Could I simply remind all families that students who are unwell and displaying obvious signs of illness should remain at home until these symptoms clear. Note also that should a student become unwell during the course of a school day, they will be required to be collected from the Student Services Office, as per standard College procedure. Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged when indoors for all students, when physical distancing is not possible, and for people who believe they have been exposed to COVID-19. Your assistance here is greatly appreciated. The College still has a supply of Rapid Antigen Tests which can be accessed via the Student Services Office should you require these.
For our first reflection for 2023, I include the following story for your perusal:
The Treasure
Four young adults sit by the bedside of their dying father. The old man, with his last breath, tells them there is a huge treasure buried in the family fields. The siblings crowd around him crying, ‘where, where?’ but it is too late. The day after the funeral and for many days to come, the young adults go out with their picks and shovels and turn the soil, digging deeply into the ground from one end of each field to the other. They find nothing and, bitterly disappointed, abandon the search.
The next season, the farm has its best harvest ever…
We extend our collective sympathies to the families of Mr Craig Saad, Mr Luke Collings, Dr Toni Pacey and Ms Bronwyn King (former Indigenous Education Worker) who have all lost family members over the holidays. May they rest in peace.
Finally, I look forward to working with all parents and guardians of the Woodlawn community throughout the course of 2023 and ask for your ongoing support as we work in partnership to really make a difference in the lives of our children.
Sincerely
Aaron Beach

From the Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching

Welcome back to school for Term One, 2023.
I hope you all had a safe break. To our new students and families, and to those who are returning, I do hope that 2023 will be a time for learning, creating new friendships, building on relationships and forging strong links with the College. I encourage all students to become actively engaged with the College Community and involve themselves in the rich co-curricular activities Woodlawn offers. We encourage students and families to take an active role in the life of the College. There is a link to the College Calendar in the Newsletter and it is important that all parents and students view upcoming events. There are a number of functions for year groups and the whole school community that parents are encouraged to attend. Keeping an eye on the College Calendar will ensure these events are not missed.
High Achievers Assembly
On Monday, 6 February some of our former students from the class of 2022 returned to the College for a special Academic Assembly to celebrate the success of our 2022 cohort. These students achieved: 50 High Achievers awards, two students placed on the All Round Achievers Merit List, with one Top Achiever Award. Congratulations to these students and all of our 2022 cohort.
A summary of their achievements can be found here.
Swimming Carnival
In 2023, the College will once again be able to run the Twilight Swimming Carnival which will be held on Friday, 17 February. I would like to invite parents to come along and witness the tremendous House and school spirit that will be on display. I always feel immensely proud of our students during this evening and I am reminded of what a great school Woodlawn is and what fantastic students we have.
St John’s College Woodlawn, Traffic Management Plan
Overview
St John’s College acknowledges the complexity around traffic flow – both pedestrian and vehicular – within and immediately outside the St John’s College Precinct. That complexity poses a potential risk, particularly to pedestrians, and the reduction of that risk demands cooperation from staff, students, parents, visitors to the College, and external service providers.
It is imperative, therefore, that the following directions be observed:
- No private vehicles should park or stand on Woodlawn Road to drop, collect or wait for students;
- No private vehicles should park or stand on Woodlawn Road for the purpose of business exchange at the College;
- Parents should avoid using the main entrance during peak bus periods: i.e. between 8.35 am and 8.55 am, and 3.15pm and 3.35pm;
- Drivers must not pick up students from the main driveway;
- Drivers need to pick up students from the designated drop off zone, at the bottom driveway roundabout, adjacent to the Kim Evans Oval.
For ease of movement and the safety of all involved the following parking directions are to be observed:
- Staff parking is available in designated areas;
- Visitor parking is available on the Front Drive;
- Student parking is available on the ovals.
All vehicles are to enter the College via the Fr Smith Drive (adjacent to the Tennis Courts) with the exception of parents dropping off or picking up their children from the designated Drop Off/Pick Up Zone at the bottom drive (adjacent to the Kim Evans Oval). Cars parked on the bottom drive between the front gate and the driveway leading to the Kim Evans oval may also exit via the bottom drive.
Pedestrians should be alert to the possibility of vehicles at all times. Students are to use pathways wherever they are available and must use the pedestrian crossing on the main drive.

From the Assistant Principal - Mission

Welcome to our new families, returning families, staff and the wider community. I have been so impressed with the engagement levels of all students over the past week. There are so many highlights and I would like to thank all parents for the support and encouragement you have given our students. If there was one theme that sums up the return to College life, it would be ‘miles of smiles’.

In line with our Mission, to ‘enable all students to have life to the full’, we have been recognising achievements, providing opportunities for growth, and the formation of connections between Home Groups, House Groups and within year levels. At our opening College Assembly, we gave thanks for the gift of education, acknowledged the importance of the stewardship at the College, and the beautiful environment on which we gather and for the passport that a Woodlawn education provides. A special congratulations to our 2022 graduates whose outstanding results were celebrated this week.

Getting to know our Leaders
Lilly Munce is one of our College Captains and today I have asked Lilly to share with you a little about who she is and give insight into her advice for the students at Woodlawn.
What do you remember from being in Year 7?
I remember all of the opportunities that became available after starting Year 7. I came from a smaller school and was instantly attracted to the idea of being a part of our Woodlawn community. From sporting to ministry based activities and academic endeavours, I was amazed by the support that became accessible from everyone here at Woodlawn.
Did you always want to be a School Leader?
I think I became more drawn to the idea of leadership after being elected as Base Class Leader in Year 9 and Year 10, as I had the opportunity to learn from the senior students. These relationships opened my eyes up to what it really means to be a leader and how to express that to our broader community.
What three pieces of advice would you give the students of Woodlawn?
Take as many opportunities as you possibly can, don’t be afraid to be yourself, and enjoy your time because it goes quicker than you think.
When you're not in school what do you enjoy doing?
When I am not at school I spend a lot of time with my family and friends, going on a lot of road trips and travelling a lot. I also enjoy playing a lot of sports and spending time outdoors.
Next week we will feature Cory McInnes, our other College Captain.

Where are they now?
This year I will be continuing to let our community know about the lives of our students post- Woodlawn. Our students leave the College with a range of skills and personal qualities that have seen them succeed in all walks of life. This week our focus is on Russell Dent.
Russell graduated from Woodlawn in 2004. He was a valued member of the SRC and was known for his sense of humour, the strong bonds he had with his mates and winning the Berg Shield in Cricket. Carpentry was his love and he went from the College to an apprenticeship in carpentry. Russell completed his Builders License in 2012, started Russell Dent Builder in 2015 and proudly runs a small, locally owned business specialising in new homes, renovations, extensions, decks and bathrooms for the Northern Rivers region. Isaac Scutt, another ex-student, is currently one of his apprentices. In 2020, Russell was a finalist in the HIA Gold Coast and Northern NSW Housing Awards in three prestigious categories: Kitchen of the Year, Bathroom of the Year and Custom Build of the Year.
Like many tradies in the region, he worked tirelessly during and after the February floods, assisting both businesses and personal properties with clean-up efforts and rebuilding. He still remains great mates with his Woodlawns peers, regularly spending weekends and holidays with them and their families. Russell and five of his ex Woodlawn school friends even enjoyed a Vegas trip at the end of 2022 together!
Russell has shared his life with Kendall Thomson (Woodlawn graduate, 2007) for the past fifteen years and they welcomed their first child, Ivy, in 2021.
Please contact me if you know of other Woodlawn alumni we could feature.

Looking Forward:
14 February: Valentine's Day. Friendships are celebrated on this day in our calendar. The SRC are selling chocolate roses that will be delivered during Home Group time. These are on sale for $5 with proceeds going to Project Compassion.

Ministry Matters
Welcome to 2023.
My name is Karen Davies and I have been appointed to the role of Leader of School Evangelisation commencing this year. My role is part of our broader Mission team, working collaboratively with Annette Reen, Assistant Principal – Mission, Fiona Fennamore – Leader of Student Welfare and Sharni-Lee Garrington – Leader of Catechesis.
The role of Leader of School Evangelisation is multi-faceted but at the heart of this mission is a sense of missionary discipleship with staff and students in the College, in what Pope Francis calls ‘the art of accompaniment’, so that we can all ‘recognise Jesus Christ and the Gospel in the world and in all students’ and ‘leading through one’s own experience into an authentic relationship with themselves, with others, with the world, and ultimately with God’ (Bishop Homeming, 2019).
Accompanying young people as they explore the reality of God in their lives is an area that I have been passionate about for many years. I look forward to working alongside our new Youth Ministry Officers for 2023– Sophie Sullivan and Megan Elliott, in creating meaningful opportunities for our students, including Ministry Groups, our Sisterhood and Brotherhood gatherings, SHINE and INGITE Conferences and other opportunities for our community to gather and explore our faith.
2023 promises to be a wonderful year.

Student Wellbeing

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to 2023. I would particularly like to extend a warm welcome to the new families in our community. We look forward to meeting you over your time at the College, beginning with our Meet and Greet event for Year 7 families and our College Swimming Carnival.
We have begun the year at a frantic pace and it is encouraging to see students engaging well with each other and their classroom endeavours. There will also be many opportunities for students to involve themselves in school activities. Information about these can be found in Newsletter items as well as daily information shared with students.
Starting each school year in a positive manner will hopefully set students up for success. There are many ways that we can support them to do their best. Below are some hints and tips that may be of use for you.
New Counsellor
With the departure of Jessica Godfrey at the end of 2023, I would like to welcome Susan Doughty to our Wellbeing team. Susan is a psychologist who has worked most recently with the Department of Education and in private practice. She will be joining Christina Hazell on our Counselling team and working Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Students who wish to contact the counsellors can do so via email: christina.hazell@lism.catholic.edu.au and susan.doughty@lism.catholic.edu.au. They can call into the Counsellor’s office to schedule a meeting or it can be done via their Year Coordinator.
World Safer Internet Day
This year's Safer Internet Day took place on Tuesday, 7 February.
Technology has evolved dramatically in the past two decades and the benefits have been huge. These developments have also exposed us to many risks with real-world impacts, making online safety awareness even more important.
The theme for this year is: Connect. Reflect. Protect.
Connect safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.
Reflect before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.
Protect ourselves and others by taking action – by telling family, friends or colleagues about eSafety and how we can help.
By doing these simple things, we can work towards making every day a Safer Internet Day.

Here are some great resources for families to support internet safety.
Returning to School Road Safety
It is timely to remind our young people to take care when travelling between home and school to keep themselves safe.
Here are some tips:
- Be alert and aware by travelling distraction-free. Ask your child to take off their headphones when walking, exiting or entering the bus and crossing the road.
- Choose a safe place to cross. The fastest way, may not be the safest way. Walk the extra distance to use a pedestrian crossing or traffic island.
- Keep safe getting in and out of the car. Always use the door closest to the kerb.
- Keep safe getting on and off the bus. Stand back from the edge of the road when waiting for the bus. Wait until the bus has gone, before you cross the road.
- Bus Stops/ Bus Interchange Areas. Promote safe behaviour while waiting for the bus.
- Student driver reminder. If your Year 12 student will be driving to and from school, remind them that they are required to adhere to all road rules and drive in a safe and responsible manner. Inexperienced drivers commonly underestimate the risks associated with particular driving behaviours or situations and overestimate their capacity to deal with them. Have a caring conversation about road speeds on the route that they travel, where they will park and the importance of wearing a seatbelt. According to recent research, one in five teens has been found to consistently not wear a seat belt.
Restricted licence holders including learner, P1 and P2 drivers are not permitted to use their phone at all while driving or riding. This includes the use of hands-free and Bluetooth functions. Ask them to keep their phone in their bag or glovebox.
You may choose to watch with them Understanding Casual Speeding Every K Counts .

Compass
Thank you to those families who have logged in and set up their Compass accounts. This is going to be our primary communication platform so it is important that all families can access their account. During the holidays, all parents/caregivers were sent personalised login details that included a username and temporary password. If you did not receive this, or are having difficulty accessing your account, please contact me and we will work to resolve the issue.
If you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at 6626 2627 or via email.

Literacy News

Hello Everyone,
The new year’s first literacy focus at the College is spelling, under the banner: “Recreating the Traditions: We are a Spelling School”.
Particularly for Years 7-9, across all subjects, teachers will be maintaining a focus on ways to spell. Spelling Bees have been planned in the first two terms for these year levels, the first one for Year 9 on Tuesday, Week 4.
Students will see posters in classrooms, and the first semester’s focus will be on the ways words are developed historically, and how they can be changed using different endings - using affixes. Please jump on board at home with spelling to bring back its importance and enjoyment. What do the words “fuchsia” and “diesel” have in common? It’s all in the spelling history.

Mathematics News

The start of the school year has brought lots of excitement and enthusiasm towards learning in Maths lessons, which is encouraging to see. Students are keen to do their best work and improve their knowledge and hopefully this positive beginning continues right throughout 2023!
The most frequent question Maths teachers get from parents is about how they can best assist their children with their Maths homework and study. Many parents just don’t know where to start - things may have changed since the last time they were in a Maths classroom themselves! In order to help parents help their children, here are a few useful resources that may be useful:
- Eddie Woo’s video lessons (maths teacher superstar) - aligned to the NSW Syllabus;
- Khan Academy - an international resource with quality video lessons;
- Everyday Maths - a NSW Government site full of fun, practical and creative Mathematics activities.
To further support Mathematics students, the College also has a subscription to some paid online resources as follows:
- Years 7 to 10 students all have access to Mathspace. Students have login details to access this resource. Lessons and practice questions are available as set by the class teacher, or students can access it independently as required.
- Years 11 and 12 students have access to Edrolo. This resource has video lessons, practice questions and exams. All of these are great for consolidation of classwork, as part of a consistent study plan and as exam revision.
There are also two opportunities to access additional and personal support here at St John’s:
- ‘Maths & Mentos’ is on every Tuesday at lunchtime in Room 26. All students are welcome to attend and ask any questions that they may have with their homework or classwork. This is advertised in the daily bulletin every week and yes, mentos are actually available!
- An after school homework hub is held in the Library every Monday afternoon from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. This is available for students of all subjects and there is always a Maths teacher able to assist students.
Both of these sessions are available for students to just turn up; there is no requirement to book or attend every week.
After the success of the Australian Mathematics Competition and Maths Challenges last year, there will again be a number of enrichment opportunities and competitions available to all students. Keep an eye out for further information and registration in the coming weeks.

Sports News

Welcome back to Woodlawn for the 2023 school year.
An exciting and action packed year of sport awaits. The first big sporting event on the College calendar this year is the annual Twilight Swimming Carnival. The preliminary events will take place on Wednesday afternoon following the College Opening Mass. The main event will be the Twilight Carnival commencing on Friday afternoon after lunch and going into the evening. All students are encouraged to get involved and promote House spirit by wearing their House colours during the Carnival. Parents and families are welcome to attend the Carnival on Friday evening. Our P&F will be running a Canteen on the night.
Attached is a full running programme of the Carnival.
St John’s College Woodlawn Swimming Programme 2023
Our College community always looks forward to the Swimming Carnival and the energetic atmosphere on the night. Our Woodlawn P&F parents and helpers will be running the Sports Canteen and the BBQ, providing delicious food and drink for the crowd. These events are always a great success but we really need your help as a parent/carer in our College community. If you can spare half an hour or an hour to lend a hand this is your opportunity! Please indicate if you’re available on the document attached.
Swimming Carnival Roster 2023
In other sports news, the Berg Shield Cricket side has advanced to the semi-finals of the competition with a decisive win against Port Macquarie. Woodlawn batted first and scored a massive 234 in 20 overs with Rory McLean scoring an incredible 174. Woodlawn then bowled out their opposition for 94. This result will now see the team travel to Sydney with the First XI (Open Boys) who are competing in the semi-final of the Downie Shield. Both sides will compete in the semi-finals and finals on 21 and 22 February.

Diocesan Winter Sports
As mentioned in the daily bulletin, any student who would like to make an application to trial for the following Lismore Diocesan Sporting teams is to see Mr Andrews at his office.
- Under 15s & Opens Rugby League;
- Under 16s & Opens Girls Rugby League;
- Open Boys and Girls Soccer.
Finally, Roger Boyd, a long serving former Maths teacher at the College, was recently selected in the Australian over 70s Cricket side. He recently played against England, scoring 48 not out and 3-15 with the ball. A great performance from one of our College legends.

Library News

We have many resources for our students to use throughout the year:
Local Library e-resources
If you are not already aware, the Richmond Tweed Regional Library has a new app with great new e-resources for members including audiobooks and e-books. You can access these on your laptop, ipad, phone, etc.
Also for those unaware, if you are looking for an item that is not in the Woodlawn Library, you can click on the little world map at the top right of the Search page entitled "Search other providers" and you can see if other libraries have what you are looking for.
Encyclopaedia Britannica
Students can also access Encyclopaedia Britannica via the “Search Other Provider” world icon. Our user name is “stjohn” and password is “woodlawn".
Students can access articles, images, the world’s best websites, etc.
There is even a three level reading capacity so students can choose to read at a level with which they are comfortable. Please encourage your children to use this worthwhile subscription.
Library Overdues
At Woodlawn, we like to foster independent learning. One aspect of this is for students to be responsible for their own Library and textbook borrowing. Students can access the Woodlawn Library anytime, log in with their username and internet password and see what they have borrowed. There is a rounded arrow icon to the right of each borrowed item. If an item is less than two weeks overdue, students can press this icon and renew their own resources. However, if items are well overdue students must visit the Library.
Year 7 Discovery Day
For the first time, Year 7 will participate in a Discovery Day on Tuesday, 21 February. It is hoped they will finish the day feeling better equipped for the demands of senior school. There will be a general welcome and introduction in the Library by Mr Collings and myself. Then, each base class will attend five different workshops:
1) Getting Organised (using GDrive, creating folders, how to study, how to email teachers, etc.);
2) Digital Citizenship (how to navigate the web, use of social media, cyberbullying);
3) Research Skills (using GDrive and the Research tool, how to navigate the web, note taking);
4) Makerspace (an intro to some of the tech tools we have);
5) Library Orientation (the physical library and our digital collections including libguides).
Read for Ten
It is pleasing to see student borrowing has increased this year. Years 7-10 students are embracing the 10 minutes “Read for Ten” in Period 5. They are reading all sorts of fiction and non-fiction. Please ask your child/children to visit us if they “can’t find anything to read”. It is our mission to get everyone sorted in this area.
Whatever you do, READ!

Woodlawn Parents and Friends' Association
The St John’s College, Woodlawn Parents and Friends' Association is an organisation that supports the aims and objectives of the College.
The Association proudly provides additional funds to the school through various fundraising activities. The meetings provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to have a voice in decisions that may affect themselves and their children. We encourage and welcome all parents and caregivers to our meetings.
The next P&F meeting will be held:
Monday, 13 March at 5.30pm in the Library.
Casino Night
The P&F invite you to a Casino Night which is being held on Friday, 31 March in the College Hall. Please see flyer attached for further event details.
We look forward to seeing you all there.

With cashless cards there's no need for students to bring cash to school. Parents can set daily spending limits and view transactions online. Parents can also top-up funds at any time.
The Canteen has introduced a Fast-Track line for students who have pre-ordered to collect their lunches, making it much easier and quicker for students.
