Week 6 Term 3 2023
From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
Today Woodlawn farewelled one of its finest – Mrs Cathie Byrnes (Staff 2001 – 2017). The College was well represented at St Kevin’s Church, Bangalow where Mr Chris Mason delivered the Eulogy, the College Choir assisted with the music, many current and former staff members were in attendance (including former Principals, Mr Glenn Roff and Mr Chris Comerford) and our Student Leaders formed a Guard of Honour as Mrs Byrnes’ coffin made its way out of the Church. Belonging to any community involves life in all its fullness – the good times, bad times and everything in between. If grief is the price we pay for love, Mrs Byrnes was certainly a much-loved, admired and respected figure within our Woodlawn community and we now entrust her to God’s loving embrace.

Mrs Cathie Byrnes
As is the case at this time every year, it gives me great pleasure, in conjunction with Fr Bing, to announce our newly appointed Student Leadership Team for 2024:
College Captains: Jaya Wisemantel and Hamish Weekes
College Vice-Captains: Eliza Lamas and Jed Arnett
Ministry Captain: Alice Parrish
SRC President: Noah Tulk
SRC Representatives: Emily Eyre; Eliza Herman; Eden Jones; Oliver Mason; Charlie Parkinson; Luca Parsonage; Amelia Turner.

Jaya Wisemantel - College Captain

Hamish Weekes - College Captain

Eliza Lamas - College Vice-Captain

Jed Arnett - College Vice-Captain

Alice Parrish - Ministry Captain

Noah Tulk - SRC President
Student Representative Council

Emily Eyre; Eliza Herman; Eden Jones; Oliver Mason; Charlie Parkinson; Luca Parsonage; Amelia Turner.
The process for selecting our House Captains now begins, with announcements to be made in the coming days.
On behalf of the entire Woodlawn community, I congratulate these students on their respective appointments and assure them of our support throughout the year ahead. Special thanks to Mrs Annette Reen and Mrs Stevie Colman for facilitating this process for us.
We were joined by Fr Gerry Hall SM at our Staff Retreat last Friday. In conversation with Fr Gerry, I raised the idea of celebrating an Annual Requiem Mass, praying especially in 2023 for our former College Rector, Fr Bill Ryder SM, along with all deceased members of our College community. The tentative date set down for our inaugural Annual Requiem Mass is Saturday, 4 November at 10am in the College Chapel, to be followed by Morning Tea in the Dining Room. Please mark this date on your calendars.
While we may be nearing the end of the traditional cold and flu season, many students and staff are currently unwell, so we offer a gentle reminder to families to ensure that students who are displaying signs of illness remain at home until these symptoms have eased. The College still has a small supply of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) available to students (most with Expiry Dates of July, 2023). If you require these, please collect via SSO.
As this fortnight’s reflection, I share the following prayer which formed part of last week’s Staff Retreat:
Dear Lord,
Whether we see it as fate, coincidence, or
part of your divine plan, we are
brought here today as part of your plan for
our school community. Our
part, big or small, is meant to be played out
with Mary as our model:
humble, authentic, and deeply committed to
Christ’s mission: a mission of
compassion, reconciliation and justice.
Give us the courage to live out the Gospel
with integrity, to support each
other in our daily work, and appreciate
always that the students we seek to
educate and support will learn more from
what we do than what we say.
St John: Pray For Us.
Finally, this will be my last Newsletter for the next ten weeks or so, as I have been asked to join the CSO Tweed Office as the Acting Regional Service Leader, replacing Mr Mark McDonald who is taking Long Service Leave.
We are blessed with a great pool of Senior Leaders at Woodlawn, and the following appointments will take effect from next Thursday, 31 August:
- Mrs Annette Reen – Acting Principal
- Mrs Fiona Fennamore – Acting Assistant Principal – Mission
- Mrs Karen Davies – Acting Leader of Student Welfare
- Mrs Kallie Deegan – Acting Leader of School Evangelisation
- Mrs Angela Jeffery – Teacher of Religious Education
I am sure that you will afford each of these ladies the same outstanding level of support I have come to expect over these past four years at Woodlawn. Of course, I will be present at our major upcoming celebrations: Spring Fling; Year 12 Graduation and Year 12 Formal and look forward to seeing many of you at these events. I will resume my substantive position at the College on Monday, 13 November.
Enjoy the weeks ahead and thank you, as always, for your ongoing support.
Sincerely
Aaron Beach
Principal
From the Assistant Principal - Mission

I would like to thank our families for your support of our Staff Spirituality Retreat. We journeyed to Camp Bornhoffen last Friday and were able to connect with each other and the key themes of the Retreat. Bishop Gregory and the CSO Mission Team prepared a Retreat based on the importance of our vocation and our relationships with families and students. Throughout the day we shared prayer, reflections, and listened to each other as we unpacked the Bishop's messages. One of the key reflections was that work is not something we do, it is a relationship between ourselves, those we serve, and God. The Pope’s message, written in ‘Fratelli Tutti’ recognises that we are travelling companions on a common planet with a common vocation to foster relationships.

We wish our students well as they travel to the SHINE gathering at Coffs Harbour. All Ministry classes from around the Diocese gather for a collective faith experience. They will participate in workshops, rallies, Mass, Adoration, and listen to a range of speakers. Our Senior Ministry team is also attending as leaders, mentors, and speakers. Tom Rowling is one of our key Ministry leaders and this photo clearly represents how passionate he is about this opportunity.

Looking ahead:
- September 1 - SEGRIEF House Breakfast. We welcome all families and encourage you to join us from 7.30am - 8.30am. Please RSVP using the Chronicle reminder that has been sent out a number of times.
- September 2 - SPRING FLING. This is a fundraiser for our Cambodian friends. Tickets are still available. Gather a table of 8-10, purchase tickets from the College Office, and join us for a fun-filled evening. Year Coordinators have distributed these to all families.
- Week 8 - Year 9 Camp
- September 5 - Applications for Ministry Class Close
- September 7 - Transfer of Leadership Ceremony
- September 8 - DAG DAY. Casual clothes day.
- September 15 - Champion House Day
- September 18 - Walk for Justice and Solidarity. (Walk a Mile in My Shoes campaign concludes).
- September 20 - Year 12 Graduation 6.00pm

Encourage your students to be the difference they can be in our world.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or phone.

Student Wellbeing

Woodlawn is certainly a hive of activity at the moment. There are many students who are actively involved in our community - enjoying themselves and creating fond memories and strong connections. The range of activities offered to our students is vast. Currently, students can select from a myriad of sports, Choir, Chess, Tournament of Minds, South Passage, Cambodia Immersion, Youth Ministry activities, Show Team (cattle), and Social Justice Committee and activities.
How do students know what is happening at school? They need to listen to the Daily Bulletin each morning in Home Group to find out which activities are available and how to sign up for them.
If your young person is not currently involved in an activity, please have a chat with them so they too can find a co-curricular activity they enjoy. You can also get in touch with the relevant Year Coordinator to help your young person find a connection to our community.
Family Support
We have been made aware of two new services in our local area that are designed to help families. The first is a Drop-in Centre coordinated by the Family Support Network.

The second is a community program that will provide free specialist mental health support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Rivers, aged 12 years and over.
The Strong Community Program team will provide a range of free mental health and wellbeing services and supports, including:
- One-on-one counselling and case management on-site or in the community;
- Group programs on-site and in the community;
- Health promotion in schools and in the community, as well as onsite support.
Attendance Matters

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at fiona.fennamore@lism.catholic.edu.au or 66262627.

Literacy

Welcome to the latest on literacy at the College:
Prime Minster’s Spelling Bee
Year 7 students Amelie McPhee, Nishtha Baweja, and Zac Cohen, and Year 8 students, Josephine Payne and Miller Layland, have progressed to the State Finals of the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, and will compete next week. The competition is online and works on spelling accuracy and time taken. Well done to those students, and we wish them all the best in the next round.
Students complete diagnostic reading testing in Years 7, 8 and 9. In response to that, a home-school reading collaboration has commenced for some Year 8 students using the Pause Prompt Praise [PPP] method. This method is an adjunct to the MacqLit Program, an intensive, research-based, small-group, literacy intervention for students.
Using the PPP guidelines is a great way to build reading capacity for any young reader. Checking for understanding; using strategies to decode difficult words, and following the guidelines for fluency are powerful means to improving learning and understanding. Being able to read fluently, and automatically recognising words, allows more time for understanding and comprehending texts. This supports overall reading comprehension. The PPP strategy is outlined below.

Basketball
The action was nothing short of exhilarating as Woodlawn's talented athletes embarked on a thrilling journey to Port Macquarie for the Junior/Intermediate Diocesan Basketball Competition. The intense battles, heart-pounding moments, and unforgettable victories left an indelible mark on both players and spectators alike.
Our Years 7/8 Girls' Basketball team faced a slow start in the Competition, but their spirits soared after a nail-biting encounter with MacKillop Catholic College. The game was a true test of skill and determination, with Woodlawn narrowly falling short by a mere two baskets. The girls' unwavering resilience and teamwork set the tone for the rest of the tournament, earning them the admiration of fans and opponents alike.
On the other end of the court, our Years 7/8 Boys' team displayed sheer prowess and determination, leaving a trail of excitement in their wake. After a convincing victory over St Paul's College, Kempsey with a final score of 58-23, the boys continued their triumphant journey. A semi-final showdown against St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour showcased their mettle, paving the way for an electrifying Grand Final clash. The seesaw battle kept fans on the edge of their seats, but ultimately, a few crucial buckets in the closing moments saw MacKillop Catholic College emerge as victors.
In the Years 9/10 Girls' division, Woodlawn's athletes showcased their competitive spirit from the outset. A closely contested match against MacKillop Catholic College saw them narrowly fall 29-17, but they swiftly bounced back with a commanding performance against Mount St Patrick College, triumphing 48-12. Their remarkable teamwork secured them a spot in the playoffs, where a determined victory over St Joseph's Regional College elevated them into the top five.
Our Years 9/10 Boys' team faced a formidable pool of competitors, engaging in thrilling battles that captured the essence of intense sportsmanship. Despite facing two challenging losses, the boys demonstrated their resilience and skill, delivering a standout performance against rivals St Mary's, Casino with a final score of 43-35. The play-offs presented another high-stakes rivalry match against Trinity, where an early lead unfortunately slipped away in the second half, ultimately placing Woodlawn in sixth position.
Woodlawn's athletes left an indomitable mark on the Diocesan Basketball competition, showcasing determination, teamwork, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Their performances were a testament to the College's commitment to fostering not only athletic ability but also the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie. As the echoes of the competition linger, the Woodlawn community stands proud, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in their athletic journey.

Rugby League
In a thrilling display of determination, teamwork, and unwavering spirit, Woodlawn College's First XIII embarked on a remarkable journey to Sydney to compete in the highly anticipated NSWCCC Cup. Despite facing challenges and unexpected twists, our College's athletes showcased their mettle securing the NSWCCC Plate.
The journey began with an air of excitement and anticipation as the team made their way to Sydney, ready to conquer the field and represent Woodlawn with pride. However, the road to victory was not without its hurdles. Key players, including halves Jimmy McCombie and lock Kye Cooper, were missing from the line-up due to various circumstances. This setback could have been daunting, but the team's resolve and adaptability proved to be their secret weapon.
Woodlawn's First XIII made a strong entrance, securing an impressive win over Patrician Brothers, Blacktown. The victory not only bolstered their confidence but also served as a testament to their skill and unity on the field. As the competition continued, the team faced a close and intense match against Parramatta Marist High School. The score was tight, but despite their best efforts, Woodlawn's team came up just short, with a scoreline of 14-12.
Facing another challenge against Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes, the First XIII was dealt another tough loss, with the scoreboard showing 8-6. A worrisome moment occurred when Oliver Walker had to exit the field due to a head knock, leaving captain Cory McInnes to step-up and play in the halves. This unforeseen turn of events tested the team's resilience, yet they rose to the occasion, demonstrating the true essence of sportsmanship and dedication.
Amidst these trials, the team's indomitable spirit shone through. The finals saw a rematch against Patrician Brothers, Blacktown and Woodlawn College's First XIII seized the opportunity to leave an indelible mark. In a nail-biting encounter, 'Ice Man' Elliott Farrell emerged as the hero, delivering a field goal buzzer-beater. The final score of 7-6 reflected the team's perseverance and unyielding pursuit of victory, resulting in the triumphant capture of the NSWCCC Plate.

Rugby 7s
The Open Boys entered the arena with determination in their eyes, engaging in a series of fierce contests against Lindisfarne. Displaying unparalleled resilience, they emerged victorious in one of the matches, fighting tooth and nail in two closely contested losses. The U/16 Boys, on the other hand, danced their way into the spotlight with a striking opening match against rivals, Trinity. Their convincing win set the tone for a brilliant journey, marked by a triumphant victory over Lindisfarne, securing their place in the finals.
As the tension heightened, a play-off ensued between Lindisfarne and Trinity to determine the final contender. Lindisfarne triumphed, earning themselves another opportunity to face-off against our Woodlawn team. With fiery spirit igniting the competition, the two teams gave their all in a fierce battle. Amidst this intensity, 'IceMan' Elliott Farrell, whose winning field goal secured glory for the First XIII the day before, rose to the occasion once again. His remarkable 70 metre run through the opposition at the buzzer delivered a breathtaking victory, solidifying Woodlawn's place in the winner's circle.
The echoes of this heart-pounding triumph still reverberate as our boys prepare for the next thrilling chapter: the finals in Sydney. The school community stands united, brimming with pride and excitement, ready to rally behind our athletes as they take on new challenges and make us proud once more. The stage is set, the stakes are high, and the spirit of Woodlawn is soaring higher – here's to the journey ahead!

Bill Turner Soccer
Last week our Boys' Bill Turner Team travelled to Coffs Harbour for the Quarter Finals. On Tuesday our boys played against Whitebridge High School (Lake Macquarie), a team that had won this stage of competition last year. A tremendous first half and stand-out performance from striker, Tom McPhee put Woodlawn in control at halftime with a 3-0 lead. Austin Somerville’s passing game provided some fantastic service for Tom. Disciplined defensive performances from Archie Matthews and Team Captain, Max Anderson, held the Whitebridge offense out for most of the second half. A late penalty was scored but the boys held out to take victory. The final score was 3-1.
The following day the team came up against St Joseph’s Regional College (Port Macquarie). It was an enthusiastic performance by all players with some great chances created by Cohen Duncan. However, the Regional side proved too clinical taking the win 2-0.
A special thank you to Mrs Deegan for her support and driving the bus this season. All players should be incredibly proud of their performances and the spirit in which they played this season.

Schools Cup Netball - Week 4
It was the perfect day for the first round of the Schools Cup Netball Competition in Ballina on Friday, 11 August. Woodlawn had five teams representing the College, which they did with great sportsmanship and determination. There were some tough games for all the teams; however, a special congratulations must go to the Years 7/8 Girls (Green); Years 9/10 boys and Years 9/10 girls teams who finished first in their pools, cementing their places at the Schools Cup Regional Finals later this term. If these teams are successful, they then have the opportunity to progress to the State Finals.
A special mention also goes to all the girls (and teachers) who volunteered to umpire, in between playing their own games. We are very grateful for your experience and willingness to help out our teams.
Years 7/8 Girls - Green
The Years 7/8 Girls team were placed in a pool of four - this meant that they played each team twice throughout the day. Our first game was an easy 18-1 win over Summerland Christian College. Game Two was considerably closer and we were lucky to come away with a 6-4 win against St Mary’s, Casino. We knew that Emmanuel Anglican College would be a tough game and we ended up being down 6-4 at half time. The second half was even but still meant that we lost 11-9. In order to progress to the next stage, we knew we had to win our next three games against these same teams. The girls came out firing against Summerland (26-0), had a tough game against St Mary’s again (11-9) and so it came down to our final game against Emmanuel. The game was tied 3-3 at half time, with a dramatic fall on the unforgiving bitumen right on the half time bell requiring a frantic patch-up amongst the motivational and logistical plans during the quick one minute break. The girls were determined and in control in the second half, playing some impressive Netball to take the win by one goal (7-6). This put them in first place in their pool and sent them through to the Regional Finals.
Team members: Claudia Barnes, Allie Robinson, Milani Kerr, McKenzie Olivieri, Bella Duncan, Matilda Pope, Willow Pace, Ellie McKay, Sam McLennan, Kaytlyn Turner. Coach: Sally Ryall.

Years 7/8 Girls - Red
For most of our Years 7/8 Girls Red team, this was their first opportunity to represent Woodlawn in Netball, so the nerves and excitement were real. The team were in a pool with four other teams and a bye so the day was broken up with a big gap in the middle - lots of time for team bonding and fun!
They had a day with mixed results:
Lost against Trinity 7-1
Lost against Casino High 9-5
Won against Richmond Christian College 15-0
Won against The Living School 18-1
Team members: Millie McPhee, Amber Bryant, Jenna Ryall, Sienna Davis-Job, Elle Fredericks, Emily Marsters, Alannah Davis, Marni Charters, Georgie White, Kirra Fowler, Edie Stewart. Coach: Katie Armbruster.

Years 7/ 8 Boys
Our Years 7/8 Boys competed hard all day and have much to be proud of. After a couple of late withdrawals left us a few troops down, the boys who played did an outstanding job. Most were brand new to Netball and learned much about the sport as the day progressed. We won two games and competed strongly in the games that we were defeated in. All of the boys were a pleasure to coach and their competitive spirit and sense of fun was on display all day long. They were terrific ambassadors for Woodlawn.
Team members: Will Bullpitt, Brady McLean, Cooper Williams, Lenny McDonald, Sonny Butler, Zac Cohen, Case McQuilty, Miller Layland. Coach: Luke Collings.

Years 9/10 Girls
Our Years 9/10 Girls began their campaign with a convincing win over Summerland Storm. It was beneficial to the team to have that win under their belts before they faced up against their fiercest rivals in their second game. Trinity came out fighting, as they usually do. They were incredibly strong in defence which made it difficult for us to sink our shots. However, the girls demonstrated a determined attitude and some composed play in defence and took out the win by one goal. Richmond Christian College were next and the girls posted a convincing 21 - 6 win. The final game of the day was against Emmanuel Anglican College, and if the first few minutes were anything to go by, the game was going to be a tough one. Our girls held their nerve and ended up winning convincingly and also finished first in their pool. A big shout out to Quinn McInnes for her captaincy on the day and Ava Lisetto for being a versatile and competent player. Coach: Jane Farrugia.

Years 9/10 Boys
The day began with a forfeit from Cape Byron Steiner School, which reduced the number of games to be played to four. The results were as follows:
V Casino High: 6 - 7
V Summerland Cyclones: 12 - 1
V Richmond Christian College Gold: 9 - 3
V Emmanuel Anglican College White: 12 - 1
The team was highly competitive and the boys were disappointed to lose their first game. This provided the much needed motivation to raise the standard of play, which resulted in them winning the remainder of their games. As a result they progressed to the Regional Finals to be held on September 14.
Team members are: Billy Drooger, Lachlan O’Sullivan, Dean Maher, Rio Carter, Josh Holland, Matt Gillan, Ollie Walker, Leo Smith, Keenan Faber and Elliott Farrell.

We are looking forward to the next Carnival, where with some specific training in the lead-up, we can fine tune our skills and be ready to face some tough competition.

Reminder from Student Services
School Vaccination Program
Thursday, 7 September – Catch-up for any Years 7 & 10 students.
Keeping your child up-to-date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases such as meningococcal, whooping cough, tetanus, and cancers that are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).
As part of the NSW School vaccination program, students in Year 7 are offered free vaccines for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV). In Year 10, students are offered the meningococcal ACWY vaccine.
Parental consent is required for your child to receive routine vaccinations at school. If your child is in Year 7 or Year 10 this year, you can now provide this consent through the online consent portal by clicking login with a ‘Service NSW Account’.
Read a step-by-step guide on how to provide consent online. Translated guides are available in Arabic, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese.
From February 2023, children in Year 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.
If you have already consented to your child receiving two doses of HPV vaccine, they will only receive one dose.
If your child previously missed their second dose of HPV vaccine, they are now considered fully vaccinated and do not require a second dose.
A small number of students who are immunocompromised are still recommended to receive a three-dose course of HPV vaccine. If your child is immunocompromised, please discuss their immunisation needs with their GP.
If your child misses a school vaccination clinic, you can speak to your local GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccination.
For more information on school vaccination visit: health.nsw.gov.au/schoolvaccination
