English at St John’s Woodlawn is an adventure in communication, the study and use of language in a variety of textual forms.
English skills, knowledge and understanding, values and attitudes are central to learning and development, and they allow students to take their place in the wider world as confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, life-long learners and informed active participants in society.
English is the passionate investigation of literature and communication, embracing both the critical and creative faculties, supported at St John’s Woodlawn by skilled teachers, contemporary text offerings and multimodal technologies
Through responding to and composing texts, students learn about the power, value and art of the English language for communication, knowledge and enjoyment.
Those texts include widely acknowledged literature from past and contemporary societies as well as the literary heritage of cultures not their own. By composing and responding students broaden their capacity for cultural understanding.
As students’ command of language grows they are able to question, assess, challenge and reformulate information and use creative and analytical language to identify and clarify issues and solve problems.
They become confident users of a range of electronic and digital technologies for their critiquing and creating.
